grey and her toe stitches

Well, I took Grey to our vet Paul today.
In the waiting room, lots of people said how lovely she was; what a ‘cute’ dog; what breed was she.
At which point I always mumble: ’SlovakianRoughHairedPointer’ as fast as I can and in one breath, hoping they won’t remember it, the next time they’re looking for a dog. (Doing my little bit to reduce the popularity of this breed, a popularity which is resulting in breeders being able to breed a lot of puppies for fast bucks, from a gene pool which is far too small.)
Anyway: Paul said that we are very unlucky that there is this skin tag left on her; it would have been much better for it to have been sliced clean off.
He said it was healing well, but despite that it was going to need some ‘surgical tidying’, as he put it. (Although he also added that, if we did nothing, eventually the skin tag would fall off. For some reason, that line wasn’t elaborated on further…! I do get sceptical about vets going overboard with treatment sometimes.)
Perhaps sensing my scepticism, he said it might sound a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but he didn’t think he could do it under a local – since he didn’t want to do a botched job. And, if he sedated her, maybe he could put a couple of sutures in as well, de-bride some of the semi-healed wound and in general do a better job.
Total estimated cost: £200!!!!! It’s enough to make me want to sit on her and cut it off with a scalpel next time!
So I left her there for a sedation.
Further to my notes on noise in SRHPs, let it be noted that we could all hear her (continuous, never-ending) barks from the reception area of the vet’s. This was probably why it was only 1.5 hrs before I got the call to come and collect her!
In the end, it was £165. Thank goodness we have insurance, so we will pay ‘only’ the £80 excess.
She is now home, with a (pink polkadot!) bandage up to her hock, drugged up on Metacam and with 5 days’ worth of antibiotics. Overkill….?
