workinghprs – the verdict

May 24th, 2011 § 5 Comments

I’ve been trialling Mike’s new food, WorkingHPRs, for just under a week now.

Mike has a great variety of different foods available and a few of them are even Grain and Cereal Free.  It’s very unusual to find a grain-free food for an affordable price, so Mike’s done a really good job in making this available to all us HPR owners.  I’ve been trialling the Duck and Potato variety.

It arrived just one day after I ordered it, even faster than the promised 48 hrs, and the price includes Free Delivery.

The dogs really love the food and wolf it down, and the ‘output’ is firm and not large.  The only observation I’d make is that the food is quite light (in weight):  A cup of the Duck and Potato weighs less than a cup of, say, James Wellbeloved or Fish4Dogs.  That’s not to say you are getting less for your money, because you are buying by weight (15 or 30kg), but it is to say that the sack may seem bigger and, if you measure by cup (rather than by weight), you may need to give your dog more than you are used to.  Again, that does not mean that you are giving more (by weight).

This new food is a Very Good Thing for HPRs in the UK.

  • [...] So – no more Orijen.  Which is just as well, because it’s bloody expensive and Mike’s WorkingHPRs food is far more economical, produces beautiful poos and both dogs love it.  I reviewed it a while back here. [...]

  • I can’t say anything about Orijen Jo but some foods have had the same effect on my dogs. I use a working dog food now and the difference is phenomenal. I use as a mixer, adding meat and veg. I always hated the fact that on other foods they seems to “poop” more too – and always soft – not diarrhoea – and very smelly. Breaking wind was also a problem!! lol

I must check out Mike’s food to see if it would be good too, although I’m happy with the one I have now to be honest.

I had a lot of problems with mine when they were on Arden Grange. I felt it was too rich for them. Also Royal Canin.

Thanks for the heads up! I loved reading about the dogs on holiday. It sounded perfect. I hope you enjoyed yourselves just as much as the dogs!

    Hi Annie -

Mine had the opposite problem on Arden Grange (Lamb) – then they were pooping bullets!

Just switched mine from Orijen to Mike’s duck and potato aswell, Jo. Grey has been fed a mixture of raw and Orijen over 3 years. Since his last bout of skin infections he also had anal gland problems while being fed Orijen. This caused us a big problem as he won’t let us or the vet empty his glands easily. So I started wondering if not enough bulk in the Orijen. He didn’t have this problem on raw diet with more bone content. I have also added in a carrot a day to increase stool bulk. Switching to Mike’s I’ve seen an improvement in his poos so I think we’re ok for now. I will feed the odd bone meal and also minced raw meats and tripe.

Lou, yes I do think there can be some issues with Orijen. Mine are definitely happier now, although I’m starting to look around for a good senior food for Slate. (She will be 7 in October!) I don’t want one which is just a ‘light/diet’ food, with less protein and calories – which is what a lot of senior foods are like – I want one which has other additives which are beneficial to older dogs. Like chondroitin for joints and omega 3s to keep brain working as long as possible. I will probably write a post on the subject soon!
