hunting at Bluebell Woods

Spring is definitely here.  In fact, it has warmed up so fast it seems as if summer is already here and we are still stomping around in Barbour jackets, sweating.

Took the dogs to Bluebell Woods today.  They are not actually called Bluebell Woods; that’s our name for them.

This is one of our ‘hunting grounds’, if you can call somewhere where you can’t shoot anything, a hunting ground.  But it has game:  It is rare to go and not to find anything.  The dogs get to practise hunting, pointing, holding their points, flushing on command and sitting after the flush.  I also throw in a few sit whistles at random moments.  After every sit-to-whistle, I approach each dog and reward in the sit, with treats.  Then I release them both.

Today’s tally was 2 partridge and a roe deer.  The dogs sat and watched the roe’s white bum twinkle at them as it ran away.  Very tempting.
